In 1400 Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, had a brilliant idea: planting mulberry trees around Lake Como, to the delight of local greedy silkworms. This marked the beginning of Lake Como's prosperous silk industry, which was cemented by the creation of prestigious schools for skilled artisans, dedicated to honing the talents of the finest silk experts in all of Italy. As time passed, Lake Como's silk garnered such widespread acclaim that, by 1972, its production surpassed even that of China and Japan.
